CreFlex New Sport proposes a new points system to
decide games that need a result on the day and at present use Penalty Shoot
outs (PSO).
New Sport opposes PSO on the following basis:
1) It is totally contrary to the spirit of the game of
Football, which is fundamentally a team sport, which is the main source of its
world popularity. To reduce it to individual competitions is to undermine the
game
2) FIFA is aware of the increased interest in the game in
the US and likes to promote it there – it should be aware of the ridiculing of
PSO in the US suggesting if they are so important why doesn’t the game just
start with a PSO. It is likely as the game develops in the US there will be a
call for a deciding result for all games.
3) In very important matches the PSO puts extreme
pressure on individuals whose whole mental approach is set up for team
responsibility. To see the players huddled together in a contrived team spirit
while one of their members readies for the chop is totally contrary to the
game.
4) A fair result is
one that is derived from the progress of the whole game – this should improve
the flow of the game as the teams know the final result could depend on every
action – just as in Boxing if its not decided by a knockout then its decided by
points.
5) We are now in an age of statistics for each game the
mass of information available now shows every aspect of the game - to then use PSO to decide a game is
basically a perverse contradiction to the game.
The aim is to get FIFA to adopt the following points
system at least by 2010 and to do that pressure will be required so New-Sport
has initiated plans for direct court action against FIFA.
Points-System:
Each team will receive the following points for action
in their favour:
5 points for hitting the opponent’s goal post
3 points for a corner
1 point for a throw in
-2 points for committing a foul.
These points tally should be displayed during the game
just as the goals are so the teams will know their position.
In the event of the game still being tied it should be
decided on percentage of possession.
